Origin

The phrase comes from Buddhism. According to legend, when the Buddha (Shakyamuni) was born, he took seven steps, pointed to heaven and earth, and said:

“Tenjō tenga yuiga dokuson” (天上天下唯我独尊) “In heaven and on earth, I alone am the honored one.”

True Meaning

The “I” in this phrase does not refer to the ego or a sense of superiority. Instead, it represents the Buddha-nature — the sacred essence that exists within all living beings.

So, the true meaning is: “Every being possesses unique, irreplaceable worth.” “Each of us is a precious and sacred existence.”
